Sustainable Bourne Valley

Protecting the Environment and Promoting Sustainable Living in Hampshire’s Bourne Valley

Sustainable Bourne Valley is a community-driven initiative dedicated to safeguarding the natural beauty of the Bourne Valley and fostering a more sustainable way of life.

Our mission is simple: to empower our community to take small, practical steps to protect the environment. By choosing local products, reducing non-biodegradable use, reusing, recycling, and conserving energy, we can cut waste and ease the strain on the Earth’s resources.

Our Projects

Hirst Meadow

SBV has transformed an unused plot of land into a haven for wildlife to boost biodiversity and create much needed habitat for many threatened indigenous species such as bees, butterflies, moths and birds.

Toad Patrol

Toads are a biodiversity priority species because of recent declines in numbers and after many sightings of squashed toads on the SMB road near Derrydown Surgery, SBV decided to give them a little helping hand by setting up a Toad Patrol.

The Repair Cafe

SMB Repair Cafe runs on the first Saturday of each month in The George Inn, St Mary Bourne. It is part of a countrywide campaign to repair household and electrical items that would otherwise be expensive or unable to be repaired.

Cosy Homes Bourne Valley

Cosy Homes Bourne Valley is a local initiative to identify heat loss from your home, suggest ways to improve the cosiness of your home and then identify local businesses that can help you make the changes.

Hedgehog Street

We know hedgehogs are in trouble. We have lost a third of all our hedgehogs since the millennium. SBV has joined the nationwide campaign “Hedgehog Street” to help save the UK’s only spiny mammal.

Equipment Lending Library

SBV have a Thermal Imaging Camera and a Wildlife Trail Camera to borrow for a small donation. Get in touch if you would like to find the heat-loss hotspots in your home, or film some wildlife in your garden.

We Can Make A Difference!

The Bourne Valley, a picturesque and ecologically rich area, faces environmental challenges that mirror broader global issues, including habitat loss, pollution, and the impacts of climate change.

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the global scale of sustainability issues. But the truth is, change begins at home—and in our community. By making simple lifestyle adjustments, such as reducing single-use plastics, opting for eco-friendly alternatives, conserving energy, and supporting local biodiversity, we can create a ripple effect of positive change that extends far beyond our valley.
